Founded all the way back in 1984, Ryanair is now one of the largest airlines (in terms of passenger numbers) in the world. The low-cost Irish airline is headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, but there are now Ryanair hubs across Europe due to the company's extensive network of flights. Over the decades, Ryanair has become renowned for its competitive pricing, with some of the lowest fares in the industry.
The airline is also known for its quick turnaround times between flights. Their speedy approach means that they're able to maintain a high number of daily departures.
As to be expected, Ryanair offers a standard seating configuration on its aeroplanes. Passengers can choose either between regular seats and seats with extra legroom, which are available for an additional fee.
Ryanair provides you with online check-in services, which can help you save time and avoid queues at the airport. It's worth making a note of the fact that online check-in services open around 48 hours before your scheduled departure time and close around 2 hours before take-off.
Hot tip: It's probably best you complete the online check-in as early as possible if you want to secure your preferred seat.
During the online check-in process, you'll need to provide your booking reference number, which can be found on your reservation confirmation or e-ticket, as well as your personal details. For seating, you can choose from the available options during check-in but please note that seat selection could involve an additional fee depending on your ticket type.
Once you've completed this, you can save the boarding pass on your phone to have it ready to present at the airport.
If you can’t access your boarding pass online, Ryanair check-in and bag drop desks at the airport open, at the latest, 2 hours before the scheduled flight departure and close strictly 40 minutes before. This will incur a fee of £55, so it is worth making sure your digital boarding pass works and is accessible.
Ryanair has specific regulations and allowances for hand luggage, so make sure youread up before you start packing. Essentially, you're allowed to bring one small cabin bag on board. The bag shouldn't exceed the maximum dimensions of 40cm x 20cm x 25cm and must be able to fit under the seat in front of you.
If you've purchased Priority & 2 Cabin Bags or Plus/Flexi Plus fares, you're allowed to bring an additional larger cabin bag on board. The maximum dimensions for this larger bag are 55cm x 40cm x 20cm, and it can't exceed a weight of 10kg.
If you're travelling with a Non-Priority fare, you're only allowed to bring the small cabin bag on board.
Of course, there's always the option to bring a second bigger bag on board, but this will mean you'll need to select a lower-cost 10kg check-in bag when booking online. Non-Priority passengers can also purchase a 10kg bag at the airport, but this will cost more. We'd definitely recommend the former option!
Ryanair offers different options for hold luggage; fees may apply depending on the weight and number of bags. The standard hold luggage allowance is three bags, each with a maximum weight of 20kg.
A 10kg check-in bag costs between £12.00-£23.00, at the time of booking, but if you were to wait until you get to the airport, the price could easily go up to between £23.99-£35.99.
If you're paying for a 20kg check-in bag, this can cost between £17.99-£50.00, at the time of booking. Alternatively, you'll have to pay between £39.99-£59.99 if you buy at the airport. You'd be best getting your tape measure and portable scales out as, for luggage that exceeds the permitted amount, you'll have to pay an extra £9-£11 per kilo.
As is standard protocol with any airline, Ryanair has regulations regarding restricted or prohibited items in hold luggage, so be sure to exclude dangerous goods, firearms, explosives, and certain liquids. Make sure you review Ryanair’s guidelines and pack appropriately, or else your trip abroad might be affected!
If you want the best prices from Ryanair, book well in advance. As the departure date approaches, prices are only going to rise. We'd recommend that you aim to book your tickets as early as possible. Also, being flexible with your travel dates and times can help you find cheaper flights. Maybe consider travelling on weekdays, as flights on weekends tend to be more expensive. Additionally, early-morning or late-night flights are often cheaper than peak-hour flights.
